Public and creators want more events and contemporary culture

Date:

The wishes and suggestions of the public and cultural creators were recorded in two quantitative surveys conducted as part of the Atlas Programme in 2024 and presented on Monday at the Deputy Ministry of Culture in Nicosia.

Thirty-four percent of the public stated that the Department should invest more in bringing significant cultural events and activities closer to the entire population, while 32% said that emphasis should be placed on attracting audiences to cultural activities, and 31% noted that focus should be placed on engaging young people in cultural activities.

On the other hand, cultural creators identified the main ways to attract the public as the creation of a mobile application with a unified calendar of all cultural events in Cyprus (55%) and the establishment of a campaign to promote contemporary culture (54%).

In her address, the Deputy Minister of Culture, Vasiliki Kassianidou, explained the reasoning behind the Ministry’s decision to conduct these surveys, which, as she said, “represent a significant milestone for the Deputy Ministry of Culture”.

Kassianidou stated that the two surveys capture the needs, opinions, and expectations of the public and cultural creators, while the quantitative mapping of the contemporary culture ecosystem has begun to be depicted as a horizontal representation.

“Qualitative research is simultaneously running alongside the implementation of focus groups for each art form, with the aim of completion by the end of 2025,” she added.
