President Nikos Christodoulides said on Tuesday that he is hopeful for positive results on the ATA following a key meeting between unions and the Ministers of Labour and Finance scheduled for today.
Speaking to reporters ahead of the HOTREC General Assembly in Paphos, the President said the upcoming dialogue may provide a strong foundation for a resolution.
“A strong framework for agreement”
Asked how optimistic he was about today’s discussions, the President said:
“I believe the framework that will be set out by the two ministers — a framework we discussed together, taking into account both sides — offers a very good foundation for reaching an agreement as soon as possible.
Our social partners, both from employers’ organisations and the unions, have historically demonstrated great responsibility in Cyprus, and I believe today’s dialogue can lead to positive results.”
Record year for tourism, strong signs for 2025
Christodoulides also spoke at length about the importance of tourism to Cyprus’ economy, noting that 2024 was a record year in both arrivals and revenues.
“The signs for 2025 are even better. We are optimistic we can achieve another record-breaking year,” he said.
He highlighted Cyprus’ close cooperation with PASYXE and European bodies, and welcomed the EU Commission’s recent decision to appoint a dedicated Commissioner for Tourism — for the first time in its history. The post has been assigned to a Greek commissioner, with whom Christodoulides and the Deputy Minister of Tourism met during his recent visit to Cyprus.
“The EU’s tourism strategy will be presented during our Presidency,” he added. “It is a fortunate coincidence, given the importance Cyprus places on tourism.”
