Powerful 7.4-magnitude earthquake strikes Colombia

A powerful earthquake struck Colombia on Monday, with the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reporting a magnitude of 7.4.

The EMSC had initially measured the earthquake at 6.8 before revising the figure. The quake had a focal depth of 115 kilometres, according to the centre.

Quake felt in Bogota

Colombia’s Geological Service measured the Colombia earthquake at 6.7 and said its epicentre was in the Choco province on the Pacific coast.

Witnesses told Reuters that the morning earthquake shook the capital, Bogota. The tremor was also felt as far as the border with Venezuela.

No further details on possible damage or casualties were immediately available.
