Cyprus plans to seek assurances from the United Kingdom regarding the future use of British military bases on the island following concerns that a future UK government could adopt a different approach to military operations in the region.
According to a report by Politico, Cypriot officials intend to raise the issue with London after the current conflict involving Iran comes to an end. The move follows concerns over how future British governments may decide to use the sovereign base areas at Akrotiri and Dhekelia.
Concerns over future policy changes
The issue gained prominence after UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer reportedly declined to allow the United States to use British bases in Cyprus for offensive strikes against Iran, while later permitting their use for limited defensive purposes aimed at preventing Iranian attacks.
Both British and Cypriot officials acknowledged concerns that a future administration, potentially led by Nigel Farage, could take a different stance.
A senior Cypriot diplomatic official told Politico that Cyprus welcomed the current UK Government’s approach but wants guarantees to prevent future unilateral decisions involving the bases and military action.
Debate over the sovereign base areas
The British sovereign base areas at Akrotiri and Dhekelia remained under UK control when Cyprus gained independence in 1960.
The issue has resurfaced following an Iranian drone strike on RAF Akrotiri earlier this year after the outbreak of hostilities involving Iran. Cypriot officials reportedly expressed dissatisfaction with the level of information shared by London regarding the incident and whether the base had participated in defensive operations linked to the conflict.
Following the attack, President Nikos Christodoulides called for discussions on the future of what he described as the island’s “colonial” bases.
EU support and legal complexities
The matter also attracted attention at the European level. Earlier this year, the European Council acknowledged Cyprus’ intention to initiate discussions with the UK concerning the bases and indicated its readiness to provide assistance if required.
Legal experts note that the sovereignty of the bases is governed by international agreements established at Cyprus’ independence. While Cyprus has argued that British authority should be more limited and focused on defence, London maintains that it retains full sovereign rights over the territories.
British officials have reiterated that the legal status of the bases is not open to negotiation and remains protected under international law.
UK strengthens security presence
British authorities have nevertheless signalled a willingness to discuss broader security cooperation with Cyprus.
In response to regional tensions, the UK has reinforced security measures at its Cyprus bases. According to the Ministry of Defence, additional radar systems, counter-drone capabilities, aircraft and naval assets have been deployed to strengthen protection of personnel and facilities.
Officials from both countries continue to engage on security matters as concerns over regional stability and the future role of the bases remain under discussion.
