The Cyprus Police have acknowledged increased pressure on custody facilities due to the number of detainees, noting that overcrowding problems have emerged in certain cases.
The statement was issued in response to a recent report concerning conditions in police detention facilities.
According to the Police, the situation is linked, among other factors, to intensified operational activity, ongoing arrests for serious criminal offences, as well as detention orders and court convictions.
Police highlight rising detention needs
The Police stressed that increased policing and more operations to tackle crime inevitably create greater demand for detention facilities.
They noted that it is not possible to demand increased policing, more operations and more effective action against crime while overlooking the resulting need for additional detention capacity.
The Police said they are not downplaying the issue and acknowledged the challenges caused by overcrowding in some facilities.
Measures being taken
The Police said measures are being taken in cooperation with the relevant authorities, within the limits of their capabilities, to improve management of the situation.
They stressed that these measures aim to ensure that the rights and dignity of detainees are respected while maintaining public safety.
The Police added that addressing the pressure on custody facilities remains a priority without compromising public security.
