Police clarification on ambulance priority on the roads

Date:

The Police remind the public that the unhindered and immediate passage of ambulances is an absolute priority, as any delay may place human lives at serious risk.

It has been observed that some drivers hesitate to give way to ambulances, particularly when they are stationary at controlled junctions with traffic enforcement cameras.

It is clarified that:

When an ambulance with activated flashing lights and siren is approaching a junction, drivers of vehicles ahead are permitted to move forward, even if this involves passing a red traffic light or crossing a continuous white line.

In such cases, no fixed penalty notices are issued.

Clear instructions have been given to the contractor company managing the traffic camera enforcement system to review all relevant recordings and not to forward violations when these concern facilitating the passage of emergency vehicles (ambulances, fire engines, police patrol cars).

In cases where a citizen may receive a fixed penalty notice while giving way to an ambulance, they are invited to contact the contractor company on telephone number 80008009, on any working day between 08:00 and 17:00, so that it can be cancelled immediately, following the relevant review and confirmation by the Police – Traffic Headquarters Department.

The Police call on all drivers to show understanding and responsibility by immediately giving priority to all emergency vehicles. Every second can determine a human life. Let us all contribute, with sensitivity and co-operation, so that help reaches those who need it in time.
