The mayors of Paphos and Lefkoniko, Phedonas Phedonos and Pieris Gypsiotis, have been placed on administrative leave pending the completion of criminal investigations and court proceedings.
According to a statement from the Ministry of the Interior, the decision follows official notification regarding criminal investigations by law enforcement authorities against both mayors. In the event of conviction, the alleged offences carry prison sentences exceeding three years.
Law triggers automatic suspension
Based on this information, Article 113 of the Municipalities Law has been activated, resulting in the Phedonos and Gypsiotis being placed automatically on administrative leave until investigations conclude and the cases are adjudicated.
Formal publication required
The Ministry noted that the Minister of the Interior is currently abroad. Upon his return later this evening, he will approve the formal notice for publication in an extraordinary edition of the Official Gazette of the Republic, scheduled for release tomorrow.
Authorities stressed that, under the law, the suspension only takes effect once the notice is officially published in the Official Gazette of the Republic.
