Parliament to debate over 100 bills in final 2024 plenary session

Date:

Today’s session of the House of Representatives, initially scheduled for 11:00 a.m., has been postponed to 12:00 p.m.

The agenda for this final plenary session of 2024 includes over 100 bills and legislative proposals to be voted on by the assembly. According to parliamentary sources, the large volume of issues and the necessary preparatory procedures, including the Leaders’ Meeting, prompted the one-hour delay.

Key attention is on the proposed amendment to the Vehicle Type Approval Law, addressing the recall and immobilisation of vehicles following incidents involving faulty airbags. If passed, thousands of vehicles are expected to be immobilised until the issue is resolved.

Additionally, MPs are expected to approve an increase in the childbirth allowance, expand eligibility criteria, and extend the child age limit for parental leave.

The plenary will also consider and vote on the establishment and operation of foreign university branches in Cyprus.

Another significant issue is AKEL’s proposal to tax the excess profits of banks. The bill suggests a special 5% levy for 2024–2025 in response to rising interest rates.

Among other items, MPs will revisit the 19th Constitutional Amendment, following revisions approved by the Legal Affairs Committee, to enshrine the right to access a healthy and sustainable environment.

The plenary will also address DIKO’s amendment to increase grants to sports federations by 0.5%.
