Paris is preparing for a new round of protests on Saturday, following widespread clashes and looting the previous weekend, while French trade unions have announced plans for a general strike on November 5.
A representative of the Yellow Vest movement informed Paris police that demonstrators intend to march from Bastille to the Opera district, starting around midday and continuing into the early afternoon.
Police have not yet confirmed whether they will authorise the proposed route or suggest an alternative.
Yellow Vests demand price freezes
The Yellow Vest movement’s main demands include freezing prices for essential goods, petrol and natural gas, according to a representative of the group.
The planned demonstration comes after extensive disturbances and looting in Paris the previous Saturday. Organisers hope the latest protest will take place without a repeat of the violence.
The final arrangements for the march remain subject to the authorities’ response.
Trade unions announce November 5 strike
Separately, representatives of French trade unions met the country’s prime minister and announced their intention to organise a general strike on November 5.
CGT union leader Sophie Binet called on school pupils and university students to join the demonstrations planned for that day. She also urged union members to take the necessary measures to protect protesters.
The planned strike adds to the pressure on the French government over the cost of living and demands for economic relief.
Police and firefighters warn of exhaustion
Representatives of the police and fire services have also raised concerns about the exhaustion of their members following repeated demonstrations and unrest.
A spokesperson said officers and firefighters would nevertheless be present in central Paris on Saturday, describing their attendance as a matter of patriotic duty.
