Protests over education take place across Greece

Date:

Protests are taking place in Athens, Thessaloniki and dozens of cities across the country, as students, university students and teachers demand better funding for public education and improvements to schools.

Police have stepped up security in central Athens, with 10 people reportedly taken in for questioning so far.

The demonstrations are focused on staff shortages in schools, safer school buildings, higher teachers’ salaries, greater freedom for university transfers and increased public education funding.

Teachers and public sector workers join protests

The civil servants’ union ADEDY has called a three-hour strike for Wednesday, urging public sector employees to join the demonstrations.

The Federation of Hospital Doctors of Greece (OENGE) is also participating, with a nationwide strike.

Meanwhile, around 500 pensioners have gathered at Kotzia Square in central Athens to take part in a separate demonstration.

Metro station closures in Athens and Thessaloniki

The demonstrations have also affected public transport.

In Athens, the University metro station has been closed since 10am, according to the report.

In Thessaloniki, the following metro stations were temporarily closed from 9am:

  • Dimokratias
  • Venizelou
  • Agia Sofia
  • Sintrivani
  • University

Passengers are advised to check for updates before travelling through the affected areas.

Around 3,000 police officers deployed in Athens

Greek authorities have introduced a special security plan for the demonstrations, with around 3,000 police officers from different units expected to be deployed at key locations in the capital, according to ERT.

The measures include preventive checks on people considered suspicious and increased police presence near government ministries and embassies.

Officers are also expected to be stationed at the beginning of Ermou Street, near Syntagma Square, to protect shops in the area.

The increased deployment aims to monitor the demonstrations and prevent potential clashes as protests continue across the country.
