Paphos: Soldiers clash, one hospitalised and the other arrested

Date:

An assault has left an 18-year-old National Guard recruit injured, while a 19-year-old serviceman has been arrested following a violent incident on Saturday night.

According to Sigma’s correspondent in Paphos, Marios Ignatiou, the two men are serving at the Kissonerga military camp.

The dispute reportedly began inside the military unit before the pair agreed to meet outside the camp to settle their differences.

Incident occurred in Geroskipou

The meeting took place on Saturday evening in the coastal area of Geroskipou, where the 19-year-old allegedly attacked and assaulted the 18-year-old recruit.

The injured recruit was taken to hospital, where doctors found he had suffered bruising around the eye and a facial fracture.

Suspect remanded for three days

Following the complaint, police arrested the 19-year-old.

On Sunday, he appeared before the Paphos District Court, which issued a three-day detention order to facilitate police investigations.

Investigation underway

The competent authorities are continuing to investigate the exact circumstances surrounding the incident.

Officials at the military unit where both young men are serving have also been informed about the case.
