A minor incident occurred at the Holy Metropolis of Paphos when a priest clashed verbally with supporters of former Bishop Tychikos, prompting the Metropolis to call the police.
According to the Metropolis, a group of 25 to 30 people entered the building chanting, “Bishop Tychikos is worthy.” Reports indicate that someone responded, “If he were worthy, he wouldn’t have left.” After police were summoned, the situation ended without further escalation. Supporters of Tychikos, however, claimed the incident took place outside the Metropolis.
Protest earlier in the day
Earlier, just before noon, around 50 supporters of former Bishop Tychikos gathered outside the Paphos Metropolis to protest a letter sent to Tychikos by Archbishop George of Cyprus, which they described as provocative.
Kyriakos Kyriakou, speaking on behalf of Tychikos’ supporters, said that the former Bishop had once again acted with cooperation and obedience, informing both the Archbishop and the police that the keys were left on the doors and could have been collected easily.
Calls for calm and unity
Kyriakou expressed hope that the situation would calm down, emphasising the importance of peace within the Church, a serious institution. He noted the recent problems affecting public institutions in Cyprus and stressed that the Church should set a positive example.
He added that archbishops play a vital role in guiding the faithful towards Christ and opening “the doors of the heart,” urging that confrontational actions should not prevail.
