The Paphos fire that broke out on Wednesday afternoon burned through an estimated 1.5 square kilometres of dry grass, reeds, wild vegetation, crops, grapevines, plastic irrigation pipes, and a number of trees, according to Fire Service spokesperson Andreas Kettis in a post on X.
The affected area lies between the communities of Marathounta, Episkopi, and Axylou, though the blaze initially began near the Ayia Marinouda landfill.
Driven by strong winds, the fire spread rapidly through Ayia Varvara, past Nata and Episkopi, and eventually reached a tributary of the Ezousa River. The cause of the fire will be investigated at a later stage.
