Paphos: 41-year-old arrested over illegal excavation and metal detector possession

A 41-year-old man was arrested in Paphos on Monday after being found with a metal detector and a pickaxe near an archaeological site in Kouklia, where excavations were also discovered.

Police alerted to activity near archaeological site

According to police, information was received at around 6.30 pm that a person was carrying out an activity in the Kouklia area, close to an archaeological site, while in possession of a metal detector and pickaxe.

Members of the local police station went to the area and found the 41-year-old man, who is from Paphos district, carrying the two items.

A search of the area also revealed excavations at the site.

Man to appear before court

The Paphos CID has taken over the investigation.

The 41-year-old was arrested under a court warrant on suspicion of illegal excavation aimed at uncovering antiquities and possession of a metal detector without a licence.

He is expected to appear before the court on Tuesday.
