Over 60 calls to Fire Service due to heavy rain – Students trapped on bus

Date:

The Fire Service in Nicosia District was placed on alert on Wednesday as the number of calls received due to heavy rainfall exceeded 60.
According to Fire Service spokesperson Andreas Kettis, off-duty personnel were called in to reinforce emergency teams.

The incidents mainly concerned the areas of Strovolos, Engomi, Lakatamia, and old Nicosia, with most calls relating to the clearing of stormwater drains and the pumping of floodwater from public roads.

A particularly serious incident occurred in Lakatamia, on Agios Meletios Street, where a school bus with students became trapped on a flooded road.
Fire Service crews responded immediately and safely escorted the children to a secure location.

To manage the situation, nine Fire Service teams, three crews from the Nicosia District Administration (EOA), three volunteer teams from Support CY and ETEA, as well as one Civil Defence team, were deployed.

Authorities also reported water accumulation on parts of the road network, causing disruption.
According to the Police, Alexandroupoleos and Erythrou Stavrou streets in Nicosia have been closed to traffic due to bridge overflows.

Drivers are urged to avoid the affected areas and use alternative routes.

The public is advised to stay informed via the official Police platforms regarding any changes in weather or road conditions before travelling, to avoid inconvenience and traffic accidents.
