WHO condemns “senseless” strikes
World Health Organization chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus called Thursday’s drone attacks on a kindergarten and hospital in Kalogi, South Kordofan “senseless”. The strikes killed 114 people, including 63 children, and wounded 35 others.
Local official Essam al-Din al-Sayed told AFP the drones hit the kindergarten first, then struck the hospital and again as rescuers tried to save the children. Paramedics also came under fire while moving the injured.
Both the Sudanese army and the Sudan Doctors’ Network accused the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) of carrying out the attack. The RSF has not yet commented.
Survivors were transferred to Abu Jebaiha Hospital, where authorities issued urgent calls for blood donations and medical supplies.
RSF claims major oilfield
In a separate development, the RSF announced it seized Sudan’s largest oilfield, Heglig, near the southern border, describing the capture as “pivotal”. An army source said troops withdrew to protect the facilities and avoid damage.
Sudan has been ravaged by civil war since April 2023, when fighting broke out between the army and the formerly allied RSF. The Kordofan region has become a key frontline as the army advances toward RSF-controlled Darfur.
Tedros called for an immediate ceasefire, posting on X: “Sudanese have suffered far too much. Ceasefire now!”
Repeated strikes in #Sudan’s South Kordofan state hit a kindergarten and, at least three times, the nearby Kalogi Rural Hospital, killing 114 people, including 63 children, and injuring 35 people, according to @WHO’s Attacks on Health Care monitoring system.
