Outcry over teacher transfer from paediatric oncology clinic

Date:

The transfer of teacher Eleni Anastasiou from the Paediatric Oncology Clinic at Archbishop Makarios III Hospital has drawn criticism from the Alkinoos Artemiou Foundation, which warns it will harm the well-being of children in treatment.

In a statement, the foundation expressed “deep concern and disappointment” over the decision, noting that while the transfer may be procedurally lawful, it contradicts the interests of the children and disregards earlier assurances from the Ministry of Education, Sports and Youth.

Anastasiou’s presence has been described as essential for the emotional, educational, and psychological support of children undergoing treatment for cancer and haematological conditions. Her removal, the foundation stressed, disrupts a long-standing relationship of trust and stability that cannot easily be restored.

The foundation has joined other organisations dedicated to supporting children with such conditions in calling for the decision to be reconsidered.

The statement also noted that Anastasiou’s work is particularly important at this time, as ongoing construction work is forcing children to remain indoors for extended periods, limiting their access to outdoor activities.

With respect and awareness of the gravity of the situation, the foundation urged the Educational Service Commission and the Ministry of Education to immediately review and suspend the transfer, prioritising the humanitarian aspect of education and recognising the unique role of the clinic.
