Police assess all information
Cyprus Police are actively evaluating information related to Paphos Mayor Phedonas Phedonos following allegations of abuse against his wife, Police Spokesperson Vyron Vyronos told CNA.
The ex officio investigation continues, and authorities will examine new claims emerging on social media about potential other offences through witness statements.
Interior Ministry awaits report to decide action
The Interior Ministry is reviewing the case and awaits an official police report before deciding whether to suspend the mayor. If the Police find sufficient grounds, the Ministry will consult the Law Office to determine suspension.
If the Police find no basis for action, the Ministry will take no measures, including suspension.
Legal grounds for suspension
Interior Ministry Director General, Elikkos Elia, highlighted Article 113 of the 2022 Municipal Law, effective 1 July 2024, which specifies when a mayor, deputy mayor, or municipal councillor can be suspended. One condition applies when authorities investigate an offence punishable by three or more years in prison.
Mayor responds, council meeting scheduled
Police confirmed receipt of a letter from the mayor’s wife requesting the investigation stop. Mayor Phedonos welcomed the ex officio inquiry on social media, saying it would help restore his reputation. He stated he will continue to fight for full vindication despite alleged threats and pressures.
The mayor described the situation as a “relentless attack” from a “political and economic alliance and organised crime” aimed at harming him personally and his family.
Meanwhile, the Paphos Municipal Council will meet today at 18:00 to discuss pending matters. The previous meeting had been postponed and rescheduled.
