ON THIS DAY: The night the RMS Titanic sinking began (1912)

Date:

On the night of April 14, 1912, the world’s largest and most luxurious ocean liner, the RMS Titanic, was nearing the end of its maiden voyage from Southampton to New York. Celebrated as a triumph of modern engineering and often described as “unsinkable,” the ship carried more than 2,200 passengers and crew across the icy waters of the North Atlantic.

Despite receiving multiple warnings about icebergs earlier that day, the Titanic continued at near full speed. At 11:40 p.m., lookout Frederick Fleet spotted an iceberg directly ahead. The crew attempted to steer away, but it was too late. The massive ship brushed along the iceberg, tearing open several compartments along its starboard side.

At first, the damage did not appear catastrophic. Many passengers were unaware of the danger, and some were reluctant to leave the warmth and comfort of the ship. However, as water began flooding the lower decks, it became clear that the Titanic was doomed. Lifeboats were prepared, but there were far too few for everyone on board.

In the early hours of April 15, distress signals were sent by wireless operators, hoping nearby ships would respond in time. Panic gradually replaced disbelief as the ship’s bow dipped lower into the freezing Atlantic. By 2:20 a.m., just hours after the collision, the Titanic broke apart and sank beneath the surface.

More than 1,500 people lost their lives, many to the freezing waters. The disaster shocked the world and exposed serious flaws in maritime safety, including insufficient lifeboats and poor emergency protocols.

The sinking of the Titanic remains one of the most powerful symbols of human ambition, tragedy, and the limits of technology, an event that forever changed how the world approached safety at sea.
