ON THIS DAY: The first episode of Friends aired on NBC (1994)

Date:

On this day in 1994, the first episode of Friends premiered on NBC, introducing viewers to six twenty-somethings living in New York City who would become some of television’s most iconic characters.

Created by David Crane and Marta Kauffman, the show starred Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, Matthew Perry, and David Schwimmer. Across ten seasons, Friends became a global phenomenon, shaping pop culture with catchphrases like “How you doin’?” and turning its cast into international stars.

The sitcom followed the ups and downs of Monica, Rachel, Phoebe, Joey, Chandler, and Ross as they navigated careers, friendships, and love lives, often from the comfort of their favourite coffee shop, Central Perk.

Friends ended in 2004, but has remained hugely popular worldwide through syndication and streaming. Almost three decades later, the series continues to attract new generations of fans.
