ON THIS DAY: Fall of Berlin (1945)

Date:

The Fall of Berlin on May 2, 1945 marked one of the most decisive moments of the 20th century. After weeks of intense urban combat, Soviet forces entered and took control of Berlin, the heart of Nazi Germany. The city had been reduced to ruins, and the fighting symbolized the final collapse of a regime that had plunged the world into war.

Just days earlier, Adolf Hitler had died in his bunker, leaving the German command structure in disarray. With Berlin surrounded and no realistic hope of reinforcement, German forces ultimately surrendered the city to the Soviet army.

The fall of Berlin effectively ended Nazi rule and paved the way for Germany’s unconditional surrender on May 8, 1945. It also marked the beginning of a new geopolitical era. Europe would soon be divided, with Berlin itself becoming a focal point of tension between East and West during the Cold War.

Beyond its military significance, the event remains a powerful symbol of both destruction and liberation. It closed a devastating chapter of war while opening the door to rebuilding and to a long, complex process of reckoning with the past.
