On 25 February, we celebrate the birth of George Harrison, the legendary British guitarist, songwriter, and one of the four iconic members of The Beatles. Born in 1943 in Liverpool, Harrison became known as the “Quiet Beatle,” yet his influence on the band and music history was profound. Though often overshadowed by John Lennon and Paul McCartney, Harrison played a crucial role in shaping The Beatles’ sound and expanding their musical horizons.
Harrison’s contributions to The Beatles went beyond his exceptional guitar skills. He introduced the band to Indian music and spirituality, which influenced groundbreaking albums like Revolver (1966) and Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band (1967). His use of the sitar on Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown) was a pivotal moment in Western popular music. While Lennon and McCartney dominated songwriting in the band’s early years, Harrison emerged as a talented composer, penning classics such as While My Guitar Gently Weeps, Here Comes the Sun, and Something, the latter of which became one of The Beatles’ most celebrated love songs.
After The Beatles disbanded in 1970, Harrison embarked on a successful solo career, proving his artistry was not limited to his former band. His triple album All Things Must Pass (1970) featured the hit My Sweet Lord, which became an enduring classic. He also organised the Concert for Bangladesh in 1971, one of the first major charity concerts, setting a precedent for future benefit events. Harrison continued to release music, collaborate with fellow artists, and later became a member of the supergroup The Traveling Wilburys alongside Bob Dylan, Roy Orbison, Tom Petty, and Jeff Lynne.
Despite his immense success, Harrison remained a private individual, focusing on his spiritual journey and philanthropy. He battled illness in his later years and sadly passed away on 29 November 2001 at the age of 58. His legacy, however, continues to inspire musicians and fans worldwide. As we remember George Harrison on this day, we celebrate his contributions to music, his innovative spirit, and his timeless songs that continue to touch hearts across generations.
