No threat to Cyprus, British Bases reassure local authorities

Officials from the British Bases have reassured local authorities that there is no reason for concern for Cyprus despite the ongoing developments in the Middle East. The assurance was given during a meeting with Ayia Napa Mayor Christos Zannetou and local deputy mayors from the surrounding municipal districts.

According to a statement by Ayia Napa municipality, the meeting took place on Wednesday with senior representatives of the Sovereign Base Areas administration, including senior administrative officer Fleur Thomas and Dhekelia civil administrator Maria Kyriakidou-Pieri. Deputy mayors from Liopetri, Avgorou and Achna also attended the briefing.

Officials presented an updated assessment of the situation in the region and stressed that there is no security threat to Cyprus, highlighting the high level of stability and safety on the island despite tensions in the wider Middle East.

Safety and stability remain high

Particular reference was made to the fact that British nationals living in Cyprus continue their daily activities normally, including in areas near the military bases, which authorities said reflects the stable security environment.

Mayor Zannetou said the briefing was clear and reassuring, stressing that during periods of international uncertainty it is important to remain calm and responsible. He added that Cyprus remains a safe, stable and reliable destination and that local authorities are working to maintain confidence ahead of the tourist season.
