MP questioned after immunity lifted
DISY MP Nikos Sykas told police he neither struck nor threatened his former partner during hours of questioning and investigation this week. The questioning came after the Supreme Court removed his parliamentary immunity at the Attorney General’s request.
Allegations from New Year’s Eve
Sykas testified at Limassol’s investigative unit, answering questions about allegations made by his former partner after returning from Athens. She accused him of violence on New Year’s Eve in Athens but withdrew her complaint three days later.
Sykas Investigation continues
Police questioned Sykas under caution for four offences: violence, psychological violence, assault causing actual bodily harm, and threat.
Assistant Attorney General Savvas Angelides told the Supreme Court that the withdrawal of the complaint does not halt the investigation. The woman cited psychological stress from publicity because Sykas is an MP. Authorities will continue questioning witnesses Sykas named and are awaiting evidence from Athens before sending the case to the Law Office for review.
The Supreme Court’s immunity waiver covers both the ongoing investigation and any subsequent criminal prosecution.
Political implications
Sykas is also in dispute with DISY ahead of the May parliamentary elections. The party’s Political Bureau voted to drop him from the Limassol ballot. Sources indicate he may challenge the decision in the Supreme Court if the party’s Supreme Council approves it.
He argues that the presumption of innocence applies and the party must follow its own constitution. His team says he believes no candidate has been removed from a ballot without a substantiated decision.
