Night-time alert at Akrotiri – “Precautionary security measures”

Date:

Sirens sounded in Akrotiri and the British Bases late on Wednesday night after authorities activated security protocols following indications of a possible threat.

Residents heard the Akrotiri sirens shortly before 23:00. The alarm lasted around ten minutes before authorities switched it off.

Residents told to stay indoors

Kourion Mayor Pantelis Georgiou confirmed to the Cyprus News Agency that the sirens sounded and authorities immediately sent an electronic message instructing residents to remain inside their homes.

The message advised people to stay away from windows and take cover under furniture as a precaution due to a potential security threat.

No threat detected after checks

Later, Government Spokesperson Konstantinos Letymbiotis said authorities had not identified any threat linked to the activation of security measures at the British Bases.

He explained that officials activated the protocols and sounded the Akrotiri sirens as a preventive measure.

“Checks have not revealed any incident,” he said.

Authorities have now lifted the measures, while the competent services continue to monitor the situation closely as part of standard procedures.
