A fire that broke out simultaneously in five prison cells and a corridor at Nicosia Central Prisons on Sunday night caused extensive damage, but no injuries, the Fire Service said.
Fire contained within 30 minutes
According to the Fire Service, the emergency call was received at 10:14pm. Fire crews from the Pafos Gate and Kaimakli stations responded with three fire engines, bringing the blaze under control by 10:45pm.
The fire erupted at the same time in five cells at the Nicosia prison, as well as in the wing’s corridor, causing significant damage to mattresses, clothing and other combustible materials.
Inmates evacuated safely
Before firefighters arrived, staff at the Central Prisons had safely evacuated the inmates from the affected wing. No one was placed at risk during the incident.
The exact cause of the fire will be investigated in cooperation with the relevant authorities.
