A 58-year-old man from Nicosia has been arrested and remanded in custody following serious allegations of animal abuse and neglect, police confirmed on Sunday.
The arrest followed a complaint under investigation relating to multiple offences, including mistreatment, neglect, excessive and unnecessary suffering, and failure to provide appropriate shelter and care. The suspect also faces charges for tethering a dog without reason, as well as owning an unregistered, unchipped, and unlicensed animal.
The man appeared today before the Nicosia District Court, where the case was registered for immediate trial.
Authorities have removed the dog from the property. It has been transferred to a shelter and will be examined by a veterinary officer from the Veterinary Services.
The Nicosia Animal Police Unit is continuing the investigation.
This case has reignited public concern over animal welfare standards in Cyprus, with activists urging stronger enforcement and awareness of responsible pet ownership.
