The Department of Meteorology has issued a new yellow warning for extreme temperatures, with the alert in effect today, 4 August, from 2 pm until 4 pm.
Maximum temperatures in inland areas are forecast to reach 40°C, prompting the weather warning.
Sunny skies and hot conditions
Seasonal low pressure continues to affect the region.
The weather will remain mainly clear throughout the day. Winds will initially be variable and light at force 3 on the Beaufort scale before gradually becoming southwesterly to northwesterly at force 3 to 4. Along the southern coast, winds may temporarily strengthen to force 5.
The sea will be slight.
Temperatures are expected to reach 40°C inland, 30°C on the west coast, around 35°C along the remaining coastal areas and 31°C in the higher mountains.
Cooler overnight
Conditions will stay mainly clear overnight.
Winds will become northwesterly to northeasterly, while southeastern winds are expected along the northern coast. They will remain light at force 3, with the sea calm to slight.
Temperatures will fall to around 20°C inland, 22°C along the coast and 18°C in the higher mountains.
Slight cooling later this week
Wednesday, Thursday and Friday will remain mostly sunny, although periods of increased cloud are expected at times.
Temperatures will gradually decrease slightly over the coming days, returning to levels close to the seasonal average.
