New unrest as livestock farmers consider action before elections

Farmers’ association signals strong response

The association “The Voice of Farmers” is warning of possible strong measures following the detection of foot-and-mouth disease cases in the Limassol district, specifically in the area of Pachna.

According to information, the association is expected to hold a new meeting today in Choirokoitia, where members will decide on their next steps. Sources suggest that the possibility of taking dynamic measures ahead of the elections has not been ruled out.

Emergency meeting called

In a public post, the President of the Livestock Committee, Neophytos Neophytou, announced an emergency meeting scheduled for 8:00 p.m. at the Paronama – Agriculture Centre in Choirokoitia.

He said recent developments require immediate and significant decisions and apologised for the short notice, urging members to attend.

He added that further announcements would be made during the meeting.

Disease outbreak raises concerns

The developments follow the confirmation of foot-and-mouth disease cases in an animal unit in Pachna, which prompted containment and control measures by veterinary authorities.

The situation has raised concern within the livestock sector, particularly regarding restrictions, movement controls and potential economic impact on farmers.

Possible escalation ahead

The association’s warning of “dynamic measures” indicates potential escalation if demands are not addressed, with discussions expected to focus on sector support and crisis management.

Authorities have not yet commented on any planned industrial action.
