The Department of Road Transport has issued a warning regarding a recall after 664 vehicles in Cyprus were identified as being affected by a critical Takata airbag defect.
The issue was flagged following notification from General Motors, which confirmed that the affected Saab vehicles may contain faulty driver airbags linked to the Takata inflator system.
Airbag defect risk
According to authorities, in the event of airbag deployment, there is a risk that the inflator may rupture, causing metal fragments to be released into the vehicle cabin.
This malfunction can result in serious injury or even death, prompting urgent action from regulators and manufacturers.

A total of 664 Saab vehicles have been identified as part of the recall campaign.

Vehicle owners can also check details through the Department of Road Transport website.
Authorities have already sent registered letters and SMS notifications to affected owners using contact details stored in the official system.
Owner instructions and deadline
Owners are required to replace the defective airbag within eight months.
Repairs must be carried out by a licensed vehicle technician, with technical support and necessary replacement parts available.
After completion of the repair, owners must submit original confirmation documents to the Department of Road Transport.

Failure to comply within the deadline will result in suspension of the vehicle’s roadworthiness certificate. This will also lead to suspension of the registration licence and prevent the vehicle from undergoing technical inspection until compliance is completed.
Safety warning to drivers
Authorities strongly advise owners of affected vehicles not to use them until the defective airbag has been replaced.
The Department stressed that this is a serious road safety issue and timely compliance is essential to protect drivers, passengers and other road users.
