Negotiators to meet Thursday ahead of leaders’ meeting

Date:

Negotiators from the two communities are due to meet on Thursday ahead of the August 26 meeting between President Nikos Christodoulides and Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhürman.

According to information obtained by the Cyprus News Agency (CNA), the negotiators will meet at 11 am on Thursday to prepare for the leaders’ meeting.

The Greek Cypriot side aims for a substantive discussion between the two leaders on issues raised during the UN Secretary-General’s visit to Cyprus, particularly preparations for the next expanded meeting.

Focus on renewed negotiations

Christodoulides recently said the coming period would be particularly critical, with continuous and intensive consultations aimed at enabling the UN Secretary-General to convene an expanded conference and announce the resumption of negotiations.

Meanwhile, the United Nations is continuing its work to record the areas of convergence reached so far.

The Cyprus talks follow the UN Secretary-General’s announcement after his joint meeting with Christodoulides and Erhürman in Nicosia on July 29.

At the time, the UN chief said he had decided to convene another 5+1 meeting following appropriate preparation on confidence-building measures, methodology and substantive issues, while taking into account the convergences already achieved.

The upcoming negotiators’ meeting is expected to form part of preparations for the August 26 leaders’ meeting and the broader effort to restart the Cyprus negotiations.
