Parliament backs new cancer institute

The Cyprus House of Representatives has unanimously approved legislation establishing the “National Cancer Institute.” The institute will coordinate and manage cancer-related issues, including preparing, reviewing, updating, and implementing the national cancer strategy.

Coordinated approach to cancer care

MP Andreas Apostolou of DIKO emphasised that Cyprus now gains a high-authority coordinating body, with the institute’s head required to have expertise in oncology. DIPA MP Giorgos Penintaex highlighted that while high-quality services exist, they were previously fragmented and lacked coordination, which the new legislation addresses.

Independent MP Alexandra Attalidou noted that modern states must focus on both prevention and treatment, with leadership requiring professional knowledge. Socialist MP Kostis Efstathiou stressed the importance of empathy, care, and solidarity towards cancer patients.

Ensuring patient-centered governance

Nicosia MP Irene Charalampidou emphasised that appointments should prioritise patients’ interests over political considerations. AKEL MP Marina Nikolaou highlighted the institute as a long-standing party goal to create a unified body supporting the national cancer strategy.

Positive response from multiple parties

DISY MPs Christodoulos Pazaros and Savvia Orfanidou described the legislation as a positive development, enhancing early diagnosis, coordination, and comprehensive care for patients. House President Annita Demetriou noted that while significant services already exist, the institute introduces a vital coordinating role.
