Police are investigating a case involving a 25-year-old motorcyclist who was arrested following multiple alleged offences during a traffic check in the Famagusta district.
According to police, the incident occurred shortly after 11:30am yesterday when members of the Special Motorcyclists Unit were conducting checks at the Paralimni–Deryneia roundabout.
Officers reportedly stopped the rider for not wearing a protective helmet, but the motorcyclist allegedly accelerated and attempted to evade the checkpoint.
Police officer injured during incident
During the incident, one officer was struck by the motorcycle and sustained a hand injury. The motorcycle then collided with a parked vehicle and came to a stop at the scene.
Both the officer and the suspect later received medical treatment at Famagusta General Hospital and were discharged.
Drugs and alcohol findings
During a search of the motorcycle, police reportedly found a grinder containing traces of suspected cannabis in a storage compartment under the seat.
The 25-year-old was also tested for alcohol, recording 21μg%, above the legal limit of 9μg%, while a preliminary drug test returned a positive result.
Following the checks, he was arrested for a series of offences, including reckless and negligent acts, drug possession and serious traffic violations.
Legal follow-up
After the completion of initial investigations, the suspect was released and is expected to be summoned to court at a later stage.
His driving licence was also suspended.
The Paralimni Police Station and the Cyprus Drug Law Enforcement Unit (YKAN) continue investigations into the case.
