Mother of Takata airbag victim thanks MPs for warning the public

Date:

“Bravo to the MPs… they withstood the pressures they faced”

Maria Loui, the mother of Kyriakos Oxinos, who lost his life due to a Takata airbag explosion in his vehicle, appeared on Mesimeri kai Kati.

Maria Loui began her campaign to raise awareness and educate both the authorities and the public about the deadly airbags.

In her opening remarks, she congratulated the MPs for their humanity in addressing such a serious issue.

“They withstood the pressures they faced,” she said, expressing her satisfaction that steps have been taken towards protecting citizens and addressing a very serious problem. Loui was commenting on the passage of legislation by Parliament yesterday regarding vehicle recalls.

“The law must be implemented swiftly”

She emphasised that the key is to implement the legislation quickly and faithfully. “The state has provided the mechanism; now it is up to the relevant authorities to enforce it,” she added.

Loui referred to EU regulations that, since 2018, have provided guidelines to the relevant parties. She stated that it is now up to the competent authority and representatives to act responsibly. “This is not a simple matter; we are talking about deaths and irreversible injuries… we are talking about a ticking time bomb,” she stressed.

When asked if any of the companies involved had contacted her during this time, she responded that they had not.

“My case is now with the Legal Service. They will decide what happens next,” she concluded.
