More than one in four in Cyprus unable to afford a week’s holiday

Date:

More than one in four people in Cyprus aged 16 and over could not afford the cost of a one-week annual holiday away from home in 2025, according to new holiday affordability data published by Eurostat.

The figures show that 27.6% of people in Cyprus were unable to cover the cost of a week’s holiday, slightly above the European Union average of 27.5%.

EU figure rises slightly

According to Eurostat, 27.5% of the EU population aged 16 and over could not afford a one-week holiday away from home in 2025.

The figure increased by 0.5 percentage points compared with 2024. However, it remained 7.7 percentage points lower than the level recorded in 2015.

The latest data indicate that holiday affordability remains a challenge for a significant share of households across the bloc despite long-term improvements over the past decade.

Romania records highest rate

Romania recorded the highest percentage in the EU, with 61.4% of people unable to afford a one-week holiday away from home.

Greece followed with 46.6%, while Bulgaria and Hungary both recorded rates of 39.1%.

Luxembourg reports lowest share

At the other end of the scale, Luxembourg recorded the lowest percentage, with just 10.6% of people unable to afford a week’s holiday.

Sweden followed at 12.4%, while the Netherlands recorded 12.8%.

The latest Eurostat figures place Cyprus close to the EU average, highlighting that holiday affordability continues to affect more than a quarter of the island’s adult population.
