Mitsotakis visits Berlin and meets with Merz

Date:

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis arrived at the Federal Chancellery in Berlin on Tuesday, where he was met by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz. Mitsotakis was received with military honours and bilateral talks have now begun. After the meeting, the two leaders will make statements to the press.
In the evening, the Greek premier will speak as guest of honour at the annual conference of the Economic Council Germany, where he will be honoured for the government’s reforms and the recovery of the Greek economy.

Marinakis said that Mitsotakis is the first European leader to be received by Merz in the Chancellery. Press statements will follow the meeting.

Bilateral relations, cooperation within the EU, and international policy issues will be the focus of talks in Berlin between Chancellor Merz and Prime Minister Mitsotakis in Berlin, according to German government spokesperson Stefan Cornelius. The prime minister will find “great understanding” on the issue of migration, the spokesperson stressed on Monday.

According to the relevant announcement, Mitsotakis will be received with military honours at the Chancellery (13:00 Athens time), while the joint press conference is scheduled for 14:30 (Athens time).
Responding to a question about whether migration will be a topic of discussion during the talks, Cornelius stated that “the issue of migration will likely play a role in all talks with our European neighbours, allies and friends, and therefore also in the talks with Mitsotakis,” adding: “I believe that in the relations between Germany and Greece there is a lot of experience in this context. I believe that in general, we have done a lot in our communication with our European neighbours on the issue of migration. The Minister of the Interior, but also the Chancellor, in his talks always referred to the issue, so it will be the same in his talks with the Greek prime minister.”
