Ministers to decide on Aristotelous suspension today

Date:

The Cypriot Cabinet is expected to decide today whether to suspend Anna Aristotelous, the deputy director-general of the Prisons Department, following the launch of a criminal investigation against her.

The matter was tabled for discussion at a Cabinet meeting scheduled for 09:30 a.m., with sources indicating a decision will be made later in the day.

President Nikos Christodoulides, speaking to reporters on Tuesday night, declined to pre-empt the outcome. He confirmed that the issue would be handled directly by the Council of Ministers, stressing that “no one should rush to conclusions.”

The investigation centres on the discovery of thousands of state documents at the private residence of a senior prison officer. The documents allegedly came from within the Prisons Department and have triggered serious questions about official conduct, handling of state materials, and internal oversight.

Aristotelous has not commented publicly on the matter. However, her name has surfaced as part of the probe, prompting speculation that she may be formally suspended pending the outcome of the investigation.

Government officials have not yet disclosed a timeline for the inquiry or indicated whether charges are being considered at this stage.

The case has drawn significant public attention, particularly as Aristotelous has been a high-profile figure in prison reform and internal disputes in recent years.

We will update this story as more information becomes available.
