Minister reveals plea from woman fearing for her life

Date:

Cyprus Justice Minister Constantinos Fytiris has revealed that he received a Messenger message from a woman who said she had been threatened by her former husband and feared for her safety.

Speaking before the House Human Rights Committee, the minister said he immediately forwarded the information to the police, using the case to underline the importance of swift intervention whenever reports of gender-based violence are received.

Call for immediate response

Fytiris said the incident demonstrated the need for the competent authorities to act without delay from the moment a complaint of gender-based violence is made.

His comments came during a discussion on the handling of domestic and gender-based violence cases in Cyprus.

More than 18,000 cases reported

During the same committee meeting, Chief of Police Themistos Arnaoutis presented figures showing that a total of 18,409 cases of violence were reported to police between 2021 and the first half of 2026.

The figures were presented to the House Human Rights Committee as part of discussions on the state’s response to violence and the protection of victims.
