The demolition of a themed animal park in Agioi Trimithias remains on hold as the Nicosia District Local Government Organisation (EOA) awaits a final plan for the safe collection and relocation of the animals living at the site.
In a statement on Tuesday, October 13, the organisation outlined the steps it has taken to implement a court demolition order dating back to 2022, saying the process depends on arrangements by the competent state services to ensure the animals are safely housed and fed.
Legal proceedings following demolition order
The EOA said it was informed of the court decision in mid-2025 and immediately began coordinating closely with the relevant state services.
It also appointed an external legal adviser, who completed the necessary steps to file criminal proceedings for failure to comply with the court decision.
In February 2026, the organisation wrote to the Agriculture Ministry to prepare for the process and requested an estimate of how long it would take to take custody of the animals. The aim was to ensure the demolition order could be implemented smoothly.
According to EOA, the ministry temporarily postponed further communication while dealing with animal health issues arising from the foot-and-mouth disease situation in Cyprus.
Appeal rejection cleared the way for enforcement
After the Supreme Court rejected the appeal in April 2026, EOA said it was fully prepared to file the relevant contempt proceedings.
At a meeting held at the Agriculture Ministry on May 11, the need for a specific timetable was highlighted. This would allow the schedule to be included in the court’s instructions while ensuring suitable accommodation and food for the animals at the park.
Authorities yet to finalise relocation plan
Following a request from the Agriculture Ministry in late August, EOA resubmitted the site’s floor plans on September 4.
The organisation said it has been waiting since then for the competent services to provide a final plan for the safe collection and relocation of the animals.
The demolition order can proceed once the necessary arrangements are in place to ensure the animals’ safe transfer.
