A 31-year-old man was taken to Athalassa Hospital for compulsory treatment following a police operation in Polis Chrysochous that required the intervention of the Police’s Emergency Response Unit (MMAD).
The man, a foreign national living in Polis Chrysochous, was due to be transferred to Athalassa Hospital on Monday after a court issued a compulsory hospitalisation order.
According to reports broadcast by Cyprus’ state television, the order was issued following a request from members of his family.
Armed standoff at residence
Police said the 31-year-old reacted when officers arrived at his home, barricading himself inside a room while holding a large knife.
After several hours of unsuccessful negotiations by police officers, the MMAD was called in shortly before midnight.
Members of the specialised unit disarmed the man and safely transferred him to Athalassa Hospital for treatment.
Authorities have not reported any injuries during the incident.
