Man arrested after abducting woman and taking her to ATM for ransom

Date:

A 24-year-old man has been remanded in custody for six days in Cyprus following his arrest in connection with a case involving alleged abduction, extortion, theft and other offences.

The suspect was arrested by members of the Morphou Criminal Investigation Department (CID), police said.

According to police reports, an unknown individual entered the home of a 69-year-old woman in a village in the Nicosia district on Friday afternoon (16 May), demanding money under threats.

Fearing for her safety, the woman handed over €200 to the suspect, who then left the scene.

Second visit and alleged abduction

Later the same day, the suspect allegedly returned to the woman’s home and again threatened her, forcing her into his vehicle.

He reportedly took her to a bank where she attempted to withdraw money from an ATM using her bank card, although the attempt was unsuccessful.

The suspect then allegedly returned the woman to her home.

Police investigation and arrest

The victim filed a complaint with police on the same day. Following investigations and evidence gathering, authorities secured an arrest warrant for the 24-year-old.

He was arrested the following day and brought before the Nicosia District Court, which issued a six-day remand order.

The Morphou CID continues investigations into the case.
