Major traffic disruption in Nicosia after lorry-car collision

A traffic accident occurred on Tuesday morning in Nicosia.

According to the Police, a car collided with a lorry.

The accident took place on Archiepiskopou Makariou III Avenue (Strakka area – Nicosia), and the road has been closed.

Police are investigating the cause of the fatal road collision, in which 55-year-old Wasantha Wajirani Liyanage from Sri Lanka lost her life.

The collision happened at around 7 a.m. on Archiepiskopou Makariou Avenue in Lakatamia, heading from Dali towards Lakatamia, when the car driven by the 55-year-old, under circumstances currently under investigation, collided with a lorry driven by a 27-year-old man, who had a 23-year-old passenger.

Police officers and ambulance personnel rushed to the scene, and the 55-year-old woman was transported to Nicosia General Hospital, where her death was confirmed.

The 27-year-old driver was arrested under a court warrant and taken into custody to assist with the investigation.

Nicosia’s Traffic Department is investigating the circumstances under which the collision occurred.

Drivers are urged to be especially cautious and patient, and to comply with traffic signs and the directions of the police officers on duty.
