Low-pressure system is set to bring rainstorms and dust

Date:

Cyprus weather conditions remain influenced by weak low pressure, while a more organised system centred over the Central Mediterranean is expected to affect the region from Wednesday.

From midweek onwards, dust will also be present in the atmosphere, potentially impacting air quality across the island.

Rain and storms expected today

Today, Cyprus weather will feature periods of increased local cloud, bringing isolated showers or even brief thunderstorms. These will initially affect western, northern and mountainous areas, before spreading later to parts of the southeast.

Winds will blow mainly southwesterly to northwesterly, moderate to strong at 4 to 5 Beaufort, while along southern coasts they may temporarily reach strong levels of up to 6 Beaufort. The sea will be generally rough, gradually easing to slight to moderate by late afternoon.

Temperatures will reach around 19°C inland, as well as in western, southwestern and northern coastal areas, around 20°C in the southeast and east, and about 8°C in higher mountainous regions.

Cool night with possible frost

Tonight, increased cloud will persist, especially in western, northern and mountainous areas, where isolated light rain remains possible.

Winds will ease to light to moderate, at 3 to 4 Beaufort, later becoming locally downslope and light. Sea conditions will remain slight to moderate in the west and north, and slight in the south and east.

Temperatures will drop to around 6°C inland, 10°C along southern, northern and eastern coasts, 13°C on western coasts, and near 2°C in higher mountains, where frost is expected to form locally.

Storms intensify from Wednesday

On Tuesday, Cyprus weather will become partly cloudy, with a chance of isolated showers mainly in mountainous and northern areas after midday.

By Wednesday and Thursday, conditions will turn mostly cloudy with local showers and isolated thunderstorms. Hail may occur during storms, while from Wednesday night some weather phenomena could become intense or prolonged.

A noticeable improvement is expected from Thursday afternoon onwards.

Temperatures near seasonal averages

Temperatures will rise slightly on Tuesday and remain relatively stable through Thursday, staying close to average seasonal levels.

Snow depth at Chionistra was recorded at 8 centimetres at the time of the report.
