Loizides defends Cyprus police after scandal video leak

Date:

Following the circulation of a controversial video allegedly showing Cyprus police officers engaged in sexual activity while on duty, union president Nicos Loizides has defended the force, calling it a Cyprus police scandal involving only “two isolated incidents.”

Speaking to Protoselido, the head of the “Isotita” union said that disciplinary and criminal investigations are already underway and that the police leadership reacted quickly and responsibly.

“There are suspects for both criminal and disciplinary offences,” he said. “The investigation was immediate, and the appropriate actions have been taken by leadership.”

Loizides urged the public not to condemn the entire police force based on the actions of a few individuals. “Let’s not lump everyone together,” he said. “These are two isolated cases among 5,500 officers who carry out serious work every day. The force responded immediately and is upholding the law.”

He emphasised that unlike other professions, Cyprus police are subject to both internal and criminal investigations, and members are placed on leave as soon as accusations arise.

“In other sectors, there are felony complaints and people aren’t even suspended. But we investigate everything,” he added.

Addressing public backlash, Loizides said there has been a wave of “cannibalism and contempt” toward a force working under extremely difficult conditions.

“The vilification of 5,500 officers since yesterday is unacceptable,” he stated. “We’re proud to wear the national badge. We will not allow isolated episodes to tarnish the entire force.”

He concluded by stressing transparency and accountability: “We are here, we are open to any question. The investigation is ongoing. At the very least, let’s show respect to those who risk their lives every day.”
