Liver cancer awareness is being highlighted by the Cyprus Liver Patients and Friends Association “Prometheus” during October, the month dedicated to raising awareness of the disease.
Global and Cyprus figures
According to the association, almost 850,000 people were diagnosed with liver cancer worldwide in 2024, while more than 730,000 died from the disease. In Cyprus, 77 new cases were recorded in 2023, according to the Cyprus Cancer Registry.
Key risk factors
Prometheus stresses that liver cancer may cause no obvious symptoms in its early stages, making it important to identify people at increased risk and ensure appropriate medical monitoring.
Key risk factors include chronic hepatitis B and C, cirrhosis, metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH), metabolic factors and high alcohol consumption.
The association also highlights the importance of preventing viral hepatitis. An effective vaccine is available for hepatitis B, while hepatitis C can now be cured.
Focus on prevention and early diagnosis
Prometheus urges the public to learn more about liver health and risk factors and not to neglect prevention and medical monitoring, particularly those in high-risk groups.
Through awareness and prevention initiatives, cooperation with healthcare professionals and institutions, and participation in European initiatives, the association says it works to promote early diagnosis and ensure timely and equal access to quality healthcare services and appropriate treatment.
