A serious assault occurred on Sunday in Limassol, Cyprus, targeting a young Israeli man outside his hotel. Attackers reportedly overheard him speaking Hebrew on the phone and launched a violent beating, leaving him unconscious with severe injury to the eye socket that threatened his vision.
The victim’s brother detailed the ordeal in a social media post, alleging antisemitic motives behind the attack. He described how the young man received heavy blows to the face and head, collapsing to the ground. Hotel management was notified, and additional Israelis arrived at the scene shortly after.
Hospital treatment delays
Emergency services transported the victim to hospital, where doctors diagnosed a fracture around the eye. Despite the injury’s severity, he was discharged after about 40 minutes without thorough examination. Only after persistent requests did he receive basic first aid, cleaning, and stitches; no CT scan or further diagnostics followed.
The brother questioned the lack of proper medical care and support from Israeli authorities. Attempts to contact the Israeli consulate failed due to the weekend closure, forcing reliance on the closed embassy. He warned that such indifference endangers Israelis abroad, potentially allowing similar attacks to go unchecked.
Family denounces authority response
The victim’s father also posted online, stating: “They beat my son at the hotel entrance in Cyprus – and everyone disappeared.” He emphasized the attack happened in a supposedly safe hotel lobby, not on the street or in a bar. The family criticized the absence of immediate help, receiving only a response that services were unavailable on Sunday.
According to Israel Hayom, the father highlighted systemic failures: “When an Israeli citizen is seriously injured abroad after a violent attack, the system simply isn’t there. No one takes responsibility, no sense of support.”
Return to Israel for surgery
The young man eventually boarded a flight to Israel, now receiving treatment at Ichilov Hospital in Tel Aviv. He underwent complex surgery to save the damaged eye. No arrests or further updates on the police investigation have been reported.
