Convict punches state lawyer in courtroom

A serious incident unfolded at the Limassol Criminal Court on Friday, when a convicted man carried out a Limassol court attack, punching a female state lawyer moments after hearing his sentence.

The incident occurred shortly after the judges exited the courtroom, as police officers were escorting the convicted individual out of the room.

According to reports, the attacker struck the representative of the Prosecution in the face before being restrained by police at the scene.

Lawyer taken to hospital

The victim, a lawyer representing the Republic, sustained injuries and was transported to hospital for medical treatment following the Limassol court attack.

Authorities have not yet disclosed further details regarding her condition.

Attorney General condemns “unacceptable” act

George Savvides strongly condemned the incident, describing it as completely unacceptable.

In a statement, he said the attack took place during proceedings before the Permanent Criminal Court of Limassol, following the sentencing of the accused.

The Attorney General confirmed that the lawyer, who was handling the case on behalf of the Republic, was injured in the assault and taken to hospital by ambulance.

He added that immediate instructions were given to the Chief of Police to investigate the circumstances surrounding the attack and to reassess safety measures for legal officers.

Savvides stressed that the Limassol court attack constitutes “an attack against justice itself and all its officials,” condemning the act in the strongest possible terms.
