Incident details
On 23 March 2026, an unfortunate incident occurred at a construction site in Limassol during concrete slab works on the third floor of a building under construction. According to the Cyprus Association of Civil Engineers (SPOLMIK), part of the ceiling formwork collapsed, exposing reinforcement and causing extensive material damage to the structural framework.
No injuries reported
Authorities confirmed that no injuries were reported, a fact described as particularly significant given the severity of the collapse. The preliminary assessment suggests the incident may be linked to insufficient design or support of temporary structures, including formwork and scaffolding.
Safety and compliance emphasised
SPOLMIK underlined that temporary structures are a critical part of construction and must be designed and executed with the same care as permanent elements. Key safety recommendations include:
- Formwork design and calculations must follow documented methodologies and account for fresh concrete, dynamic loads, and work activities.
- Installation and support must comply with approved plans and technical specifications.
- Supervision by qualified personnel is essential at all stages.
- Compliance with Occupational Safety and Health regulations is non-negotiable.
The exact causes of the incident are under investigation by the Department of Labour Inspection.
Collective responsibility for site safety
The Association stressed that ensuring structural integrity and safety on construction sites is a shared responsibility. The primary goal remains to provide an environment where workers can perform their duties safely and return home healthy.
