Historic first conviction
Last week, the Limassol Court convicted two young individuals for offences involving sexual abuse material of minors created using artificial intelligence (AI). This marks the first conviction in Cyprus for crimes committed through AI technology.
Court highlights severity
In its ruling, the Court emphasised the seriousness of these crimes, noting their alarming rise and unprecedented nature. “Courts, as guardians of legality and order, must ensure the faithful application of the law […] for the benefit of society,” the judgment stated. The Court noted that the accused targeted individuals who had caused them no harm, describing their conduct as “unacceptable, antisocial, and extremely selfish,” which aggravated their criminal responsibility.
Sentencing and rehabilitation
Given their young age, the defendants received suspended prison sentences. The Court also issued orders aimed at facilitating their rehabilitation and supporting efforts to prevent future offences. Details of the case remain confidential as the proceedings were conducted behind closed doors due to the sensitive nature of the matter.
