A defendant has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the Kofinou student murder after admitting to the premeditated killing of 22-year-old Bangladeshi student Shahruar Ahmed Emon.
The defendant admitted the charges against him, including premeditated murder, conspiracy to commit a felony, abduction or kidnapping and unlawful deprivation of liberty with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, extortion and demanding property with threats.
The offences were committed in June in the Larnaca district.
Defendant met victim on bus journey
According to evidence presented to the court, the defendant met the victim on 7 June during a bus journey.
The two young men exchanged contact details. The defendant said that following the encounter, he formed the impression that the 22-year-old came from a wealthy family.
Two days later, on 9 June, the defendant bought a knife.
On 11 June, he contacted the student and told him he had found him a job paying €50 a day.
The life sentence follows the defendant’s admission to charges over the Kofinou student murder, including premeditated murder and offences involving the victim’s abduction and extortion.
